SBL round 21 caused change at the leadership position. Third defeat of league's leader Ittihad (17-3) against second ranked Al Hilal (17-3) 85-59 was the most important game of the last round. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of Ittihad. It was a key game for the top position in the league. They outrebounded Ittihad 46-34 including 35 on the defensive glass. Al Hilal looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 7 passes made by Ittihad's players. It was a good game for the former international center Mohammed Alsuwailem (211-1998) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 27 rebounds. American guard Antwan Scott (185-1992, college: Colorado St.) contributed with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American center James Edwards Jr (211-1997, college: Southern) answered with 18 points and 6 rebounds for Ittihad. Al Hilal have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with defeated Ittihad. Just two games before the end of Regular Season and it may be the most important game of the season next round when Ittihad faces strong Al Nassr trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Al Hilal will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Al Ahli in Jeddah.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Al Nassr (16-4) against fourth ranked Al Ahli (16-4) on Friday night. Host Al Nassr was defeated by Al Ahli in Riyadh 73-58. American Hollis Thompson (203-1991, college: Georgetown) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and Deandre Liggins chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds. Al Ahli's coach Ali Alsanhani allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was American Carlton Bragg Jr (208-1995, college: N.Mexico) with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 16 rebounds. Defending champion moved-up to third place, which they share with defeated Al Nassr. Al Ahli will play against league's leader Al Hilal in Riyadh in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Al Nassr will play on the road against the league's second-placed Ittihad in Jeddah and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Al Taawoun is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their 20th consecutive match to eighth ranked Al Salam (8-12) 84-78 on Thursday evening. Wayne Chism nailed a double-double by scoring 24 points, 27 rebounds and 7 assists for the winning side. Al Salam's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Corey Sanders came up with a double-double by scoring 30 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for Al Taawoun in the defeat. Al Salam maintains eighth place with 8-12 record. Al Taawoun lost their twentieth game in a row. They still close the standings. Al Salam will meet Deba (#11) in the next round. Al Taawoun will play against Al Fateh and hopes to get finally their first victory.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 21: Al Khaleej beat Al Wehda on the road 79-72. Al Fateh destroyed Deba on its own court 115-79. Al Safa was outscored by Ohod in Medina 101-77.
